China National Supplies Quake Area 100,000 Tons Emergency Fuel
Ying Lou, Bloomberg, 14 May 2008China National Petroleum Corp., the nation's biggest oil producer, sent 100,000 metric tons of emergency fuel supplies to Sichuan after an earthquake hit the province, the company said on its Web site today.
The magnitude-7.9 temblor, the biggest to hit China in 58 years, struck on May 12, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Sichuan capital, Chengdu, a metropolitan area that's home to 11 million people. More than 12,000 have died and thousands are trapped under debris.
China has deployed about 50,000 military personnel to the Sichuan region, state media reported.
