Tata Power Will Double Coal Imports to Raise Electricity Output

June 23 (Bloomberg) -- Tata Power Ltd., India's biggest non- state electricity generator, will double coal imports this fiscal year to 3 million tons, aiming to boost production by a fifth.

Most of the supplies will come from Indonesia, Tata Power Managing Director Prasad Menon said today in Mumbai, where the company is based. Tata Power plans to add 490 megawatts of coal- fired electricity to its existing 2,472-megawatt capacity in the year ending March 31, 2009, he said, without giving more details.

Peak power shortages in India are as high as 15 percent. Tata Power needs to import as much as 22 million tons of coal annually to increase capacity more than fivefold to 12,861 megawatts by March 2013. ... Read full article
